Ginger Jar
raku-fired porcelain, bamboo
14 in diameter x 16 in tall

Raku involves firing the pieces rapidly in a small gas kiln, removing them with long metal tongs when they are glowing hot at 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, and placing them in metal barrels containing newspaper or other combustible material. Closing the barrel creates an excess of smoke and a deficiency of oxygen, both of which are critical for producing the unique look of Raku—bright copper colors where glazed and dense blacks where unglazed.
